                    Chapter 1: Beginnings.

Disclaimer: I do not own Assassin's Creed or Ranger's Apprentice.

Summary: Ranger Jade Oliver and Assassin Desmond Miles are on the hunt for a rogue Ranger that has gone into hiding in the mysterious forests of Redmont Fief. For Jade, this mission may provide the keys to unlocking her past. If she can find the Ranger, Mitch Underwood, and keep Desmond from killing him on-site, will she find out who her parents really were-a Ranger and a Courier like Crowley tells her? Or something more dangerous? For Desmond, the mission is a bout one thing. A completely human, normal thing-Jade. He must keep her safe no matter what the odds are. But when something goes wrong, will their budding relationship pay the ultimate price?

"C'mon!" The man said, as he and a green-gray cloaked archer ran through the forest. The figure behind him was a girl, but she acted, and dressed like a boy. She was an Araluen Ranger, he was an assassin, and, by law, they weren't supposed to be together. But there they were, running through the lush, greenery of a Redmont forest.

"Desmond," the Ranger gasped. "we need a plan! Slow......down!"

Desmond slid to a stop, the girl taking a few more steps before following suit. They stared at each other for a second before she continued. "Crowley told me-"

"I know what he told you, Jade." Desmond said, sighing. "He told me the same thing. "

Jade's green-blue eyes sparkled. She was obviously trying to had a sarcastic look. Instead, she choose to roll her eyes, and look at the ground. "Then we know this.....Mitch Underwood character is a Ranger that went rogue." Her head went down slightly, and her tone went dejected. "One of the best ones, too."

Desmond frown at the tone of her voice. As the weeks he'd spent in Araluen with her had gone by, he had grown used to her tone being light-hearted and happy. Not this dejected tone he was  getting from her now. He lifted her chin with his forefinger. "We will win." He said. "And I promise no one will hurt you as long as I live."

Jade smiled. The smile was really only a lift of the corners of her mouth, but it was a smile nonetheless. "You shouldn't make promises you can't keep, Desmond Miles!"

The assassin mirrored her smile. Then they started to come in closer and closer almost locking lips......

"Well," Desmond said, turning and looking up at the sky. The sun was low in the sky-almost 7:00, he thought. "We'd better set up camp here. Fire or no fire, you think?" He asked.

"Fire. I doubt anyone is stupid enough to follow an assassin and a Ranger into the forest.........." She stopped talking as Desmond took her cloak, bow and arrows from her. She wore simple brown leggings, and a light green shirt. She blushed slightly as he put his cloak on her, instantly covering her features and touching the ground. It has to be said that she was quite a bit shorter than Desmond.

Desmond's white outfit wasn't quite covered by the green-gray fabric of the cloak. He looked at Jade and had to bite his lip to keep from laughing.

She had pulled up the cowl of his cloak, and it covered her eyes and nose. She looked like a five-year-old playing dress up.

"Why the change of outfits?" She asked, as Desmond walked over and pushed the cowl back. He noticed the blush as it fled, but decided not to comment on it.

"I'm going hunting," He said, testing the draw on her bow, making Jade frown. "And you can't come." He said, a second before she could reply, "because I told you the I don't want you to get hurt."

Jade glared a little, then responded with an unladylike stuck out tongue, with Desmond was wise to ignore. She sighed. "Fine." She said, mimicking one of Halt's infamous withering looks. When Desmond refused to wither her face cleared and she bent over to pick up a bag of emergency firewood. (Making coffee, but having no firewood to brew it.....Oh, No!) "Stay safe." She said as he ran into the tree line.

And for the first time since Gilan had kissed her-they had long since broken up-she blushed a deep scarlet, deeper, and longer lasting than the one from earlier.
